Kudos to him for not letting a handicap get in the way of enjoying life and maintaining the ability to overcome challenges. I have 2 uncles whom both retired from CAT with ~40 years of service. Once you are in - Caterpillar is one big family. Even when the business/industry gets tough - they are very very hesitant to let go of anyone or lay people off. Even if your job moves locations and you don't want to go - they will put you in the job pool and help find you a new job. If you are a contract employee however - you're definitely on the chopping block when the going gets tough. If you do want to move, CAT has a third party buy your house so you dont have to wait to sell it, gives you a moving allowance, a bonus to move, and a host of other perks.
